Digital Learning Insights

The brief

A national museum was undergoing an extensive modernisation project – influencing the transformation of its digital services for learners and educators.

As a part of this process, the museum wanted to gauge how schools currently use digital resources to engage with cultural institution offers, how the museum and its offering are perceived, and how the museum can better meet educators’ and learners’ needs.

The approach

  • Shift conducted 30 interviews, lasting 50-minutes each, with teachers in primary and secondary schools nationwide who have responsibility for the history or humanities curriculum.
  • Teachers were selected from a diverse range of school types and UK regions. Teachers recruited represented a mix of those who had previously engaged with the museum’s schools offer, through school trips and resource use, and those who had not. Participants were recruited through the Shift Insight panel and an external panel.

The value

  • Understanding how the museum’s digital programmes for schools are perceived was crucial during this period of transformation, to inform decisions around changes to the offer and to track progress as change unfolds.
  • We tested the appetite for two digital product propositions with teachers, to inform the museum’s digital engagement strategy and help the museum grow its reach in schools, remain relevant and respond to current needs.
