Annual membership survey research

The brief

The Association for Project Management (APM) have commissioned Shift to run their annual membership survey for 5 consecutive years.

In addition to tracking the performance of existing metrics of their membership over the years, APM want to gain insight into how to further improve member satisfaction – and what aspects of being a member are valued highly – to help inform future messaging.

The approach

  • In each wave of this research, we have followed a quantitative methodology, using an online survey. Each year, in addition to checking and updating some existing questions – while still ensuring tracking continuity – we have added new questions where necessary to address APM’s additional insight needs.
  • The survey is sent by APM to their mailing lists. This includes APM members, lapsed members and non-members.

The value

We have produced a wide range of key deliverables, for each wave of the research, tailored to APM’s strategic needs and priorities. These have included:

  • A number of tailored reports – one for the board, focused on strategic areas, another summarising the work as a whole, alongside a series of short reports looking at specific functional areas, each with recommendations for action.
  • A factsheet for internal distribution – a highly visual one-page summary of the results.
  • A summary of ideas generated via a workshop with the APM team, suggesting the objectives and associated actions of each initiative discussed, alongside consideration of additional resources and skills required, responsibility/ownership within APM and potential KPIs.

“We have worked with Shift for a number of years on our membership satisfaction research and they have always delivered an exceptional service. The research covers, not only our membership offering, but wider products and services which generates a large volume of insights. However, Shift were able to generate key recommendations and insights that we explored at a workshop with colleagues to turn them into workable ideas.”
